Core Academic Competences
The development of core academic competences in bachelor’s programs is governed by the subject- or program-specific regulations. In dual-subject programs, these are defined by the regulations of the primary subject. Some subjects introduce these competences during orientation weeks — the period before the start of the semester. These subjects are listed below. If your program is not included, core academic competences are developed in other ways, particularly in the natural sciences. In these cases, you should also make use of the orientation activities offered by student representatives (Fachschaftsräte).
Core Academic Competences in Non-Teacher Education Bachelor’s Programs
First-year students in non-teacher education bachelor’s programs take mandatory courses (i.e., courses that are part of the curriculum) designed to develop core academic competences. These are typically offered as part of the key competences component and, in some subjects, are organized into modules focusing on academic writing, self-reflection, and academic planning. These courses often begin during orientation week, before the start of regular classes.
They are designed specifically for first-year students; in dual-subject bachelor’s programs, they are completed in the primary subject. Student mentors and staff provide an introduction to university life, the structure of the program, and academic requirements. They also guide students through the relevant regulations and explain practical aspects such as course registration. In addition, the courses cover topics such as academic skills and methods, self-organization and time management, academic and career planning, career exploration, and portfolio development. Their aim is to help new students navigate university life and develop the skills needed to succeed in their studies.
Core Academic Competences in Teacher Education (Secondary Levels I and II)
Students enrolled in bachelor of education programs (Secondary Levels I and II) earn ECTS credits in core academic competences related to academic research and writing. The courses are subject-specific and can be taken in both subjects.
Please note that courses in core academic competences are a mandatory part of the curriculum in the teacher education programs listed above and carry ECTS credits. These courses often begin as early as October 1, before the official start of the semester.
Further information on course schedules (times, locations, topics, and content) will be available from September 15 in the course catalog (PULS)
