„Clinical Exercise Science is the best program to learn modern methods in sport science besides academic training. The program is constituted of different injury prevention and rehabilitation projects for elite and recreational athletes. The opportunity to work in a variety of these projects with compassionate teachers prepared me for the following education as a PhD student. Gaining valuable experiences through Clinical Exercise Science and the support of the University of Potsdam‘s career service will help me with my future profession.“

Program Content

During the Master’s and Doctoral Program in Clinical Exercise Science you will be studying the effects of physical activity in the prevention and rehabilitation of illnesses. The focus is on medical training therapy (clinical applications) and high performance physiology (usage in health, popular, and professional sports).

Besides these theoretical, methodological, and experimental fundamentals, the program also includes professionally oriented segments. These are offered in cooperation with hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, and outpatient rehabilitation centers. Other opportunities include the medical supervision of athletes at Olympic training facilities and tutoring and mentoring work.

Course Objective and Future Career Options

With the demands of a professional work environment in mind, you will gain crucial skills for pursuing managerial and scholarly professions alike. The goal of the Master’s degree in Clinical Exercise Science is an interdisciplinary, scientific, and career oriented cooperation with different professions in the health sciences.

The goal of a doctorate in Clinical Exercise Science is to prepare you for a career in research and teaching.

Prerequisites for Admission to the Master’s Program

The general prerequisite for enrolling in a Master’s program is a first academic degree that qualifies you for a profession, e.g., a Bachelor’s degree. Your first degree should be in Sports Therapy and Prevention. In principle, applications with degrees in disciplines related to prevention and rehabilitation in sports and medicine or similar fields are also acceptable. The final decision is made by the department’s examination committee.

Applicants who are not native speakers of English must provide evidence of English language skills that correspond at least to the C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Prerequisites for Admission to the Doctoral Program

After successful completion of the first segment of the Master’s / Doctoral program with a good or excellent grade (at least B or 2.3), you may apply for admission to the Doctoral program. The examination committee reserves the right to hold interviews during this first section of your Master’s program in order to determine your academic aptitude.

If you have completed your first joint program segment with a module grade average below B (or better than 2.3), a recommendation for continuing with the Master’s program (second segment) is generally made. Exceptions are decided by the examination committee on a case-by-case basis.

If you have completed a program of study of at least 4 years in a field related to prevention and rehabilitation in sports and medicine or in a similar field, and if you have completed such a program with a degree higher than a Bachelor degree (with a grade of at least 2.3 or B), the examination committee may recommend you for immediate admission into the doctoral segment of the program.

If your Master’s thesis was assessed as excellent (A or at least 1.3), you may also apply for the doctoral segment of the program.

Generally, this English-language Master’s program requires very good knowledge of English, which could for example be demonstrated with a TOEFL score of at least 213 points (computerized test) or comparable results from other language tests. Exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis.
