August 2024: Learners present research on desertification at Regional Science Fair
In March-April 2024, 20 learners from five schools in the Greater Waterberg Region attended a research camp organized by EduVentures, with support from NamTip scientists, to develop independent research projects on topics such as soil water infiltration, plant biomass measurement using drones, and biodiversity comparisons between commercial and communal areas.
One learner from each school was selected to participate in the Regional Science Fair in Otjozondjupa on July 28-29, 2024. The project on "Comparison of Invertebrate Diversity and Abundance in Commercial and Communal Areas" received a silver medal. While no projects advanced to the National Science Fair, learners gained valuable experience in scientific methods and research skills.
Reflecting on the experience, Roparashe Tjihuro from Okakarara Senior Secondary School said, “The experience of participating in the science fair was an outstanding event in my life, I feel like a scientist now.” Vitjitua Tjihero from Okamatapati Combined School added, “This was an amazing experience for me, I learned a lot from participating in the science fair. I am now able to do a scientific study with little help.” Kakuhire Muikute from Waterberg Junior Secondary School also shared, “I don’t know where the courage came from in me, as I am usually a shy person. But it felt like I was in control of myself for once.”
Learners will continue presenting their projects at community events to raise awareness about desertification issues in the region.
