From October 15th to 17th, 2024, the final WASCAL workshop (see WASCAL Research Action Plan (WRAP 2.0) took place in Accra, Ghana. This hybrid event brought together scientists, stakeholders, and policymakers to review the achievements of six German-African collaborative projects.

The workshop aimed to showcase innovative research outputs and promote interdisciplinary knowledge sharing while facilitating discussions on effective climate change adaptation strategies tailored to West Africa. By bridging the gap between science and politics, WRAP 2.0 is committed to providing actionable insights that inform policymakers and other stakeholders, including smallholders in their efforts to tackle climate challenges across the region. Prof. Emmanuel Ramde (Executive Director WASCAL) highlighted: “Let us work together to turn the results of Wrap 2.0 into practical, policy-relevant solutions that address the real challenges our people face” (https://gna.org.gh/2024/10/african-governments-urged-to-invest-more-in-climate-research-to-build-resilience/).

Dr. Reginald T. Gurroh (FORIG; Ghana) presented the key deliverables achieved, main conclusions and lessons learned from our GreenGaDe project. He highlighted important considerations for adoption:

  • We have to find a way to better communicate results holistically to farmers
  • Influencing farmer decisions require more innovative communication if we are to achieve high adoption
  • Land tenure issues and tree ownership has to be addressed
