Health Insurance

If you wish to study in Germany, you need health insurance.

This must already be proven at the time of enrolment.

Contact details of some statutory German health insurance providers

Students from EU and European Economic Area countries, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro, Switzerland, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey and the United Kingdom

Students who are statutorily insured in these countries, must apply in advance for a European health insurance card (EHIC) or equivalent documentation (Form E-111, AT 11, ATN 11 or BH6).

After that, you must contact a German statutory health insurance provider and request confirmation that you hold statutory health insurance in your home country.

For Enrollment:

Send a copy of your admission, a copy of your EHIC/your equivalent documentation as well as a copy of your identity card by Email to a German statutory health insurance company and ask the health insurance company to send the "Meldung nach Meldegrund M10 für die Universität Potsdam" (Absendernummer H0001228).
The health insurance company will then electronically transmit the information about your insurance status directly to the University of Potsdam.

It is not necessary to submit the health insurance documents in the STUDIENPLATZ-PORTAL. Please put EXEMPT in the "health insurance" field of the enrollment form.

Students from other countries must obtain a statutory or private health insurance in Germany.

Statutory health insurance

Students under the age of 30 may obtain insurance from any German statutory health insurance provider at a student rate (currently about 125 Euro for health and nursing care insurance), which includes all legally mandated benefits:

  • Treatment by doctors or dentists
  • Medications, dressings, remedies and aids
  • Treatment in a hospital
  • Screening tests
  • Prenatal and postnatal care
  • Long-term care benefits

To register with a statutory health insurance provider, you will need your passport and university admission notification (Zulassungsbescheid).

You can secure insurance for the intended period of study from your home country, before arriving in Germany.

You do not need an address in Germany or a certificate of enrolment from the university! Your university admission notification is sufficient for registration with a statutory health insurance provder.

For Enrollment:

If you are insured by a statutory German health insurance company, please ask your health insurance company to send the "Meldung nach Meldegrund M10 für die Universität Potsdam" (Absendernummer H0001228). The health insurance company will then electronically transmit the information about your insurance status directly to the University of Potsdam.
It is not necessary to submit the health insurance documents in the STUDIENPLATZ-PORTAL.

Students who become obligated to carry insurance upon enrollment can be exempted from compulsory insurance upon application to a statutory health insurance company. The application must be submitted to the statutory health insurance company within three months after the beginning of the compulsory insurance period. The exemption cannot be revoked; it is valid for the entire duration of your current university studies.

Private health insurance

1. The following applies to students under the age of 30: If you wish to take out private health insurance in Germany or bring it with you from your home country, you must apply to a German statutory health insurance company for an exemption from compulsory insurance. The exemption cannot be revoked; it is valid for the entire duration of your studies.
Private health insurance will only be recognized if it meets the minimum benefits of a German statutory health insurance (see above for a list of benefits).
If you are under 30 years of age, we strongly recommend that you register with one of the German statutory health insurance companies.

For Enrollment:

A copy of your private health insurance is not sufficient!
Students under the age of 30 must additionally contact a statutory health insurance company in Germany and apply for an exemption from the statutory health insurance obligation.
The health insurance company will electronically transmit the information about your insurance status directly to the University of Potsdam.

2. However, if you are not eligible for student statutory health insurance - for non-EU citizen over 30 years of age - you must take out private insurance coverage.
With private health insurance, depending on the contract provisions and benefits offered, there is more variation in the cost of premiums.
We therefore recommend checking and comparing the different offers for price and benefits.

For Enrollment (students over 30 years old):

Send a copy of your admission as well as your identity card by Email to a German statutory health insurance company and ask the health insurance company to send the "Meldung nach Meldegrund M10 für die Universität Potsdam" (Absendernummer H0001228).
The health insurance company will then electronically transmit the information about your insurance status directly to the University of Potsdam.
It is not necessary to submit the health insurance documents in the STUDIENPLATZ-PORTAL.

Please put EXEMPT in the "health insurance" field of the enrollment form.
