Organizing Peace - Challenges for UN Peacekeeping and Opportunities for Reform with Peter Schuman
On 31.5 the chair of International Organizations and Policies hosted Peter Schuman for an exclusive talk on the current challenges in Dafur and South Sudan. Peter Schumann served in the first quarter of 2018 as acting Deputy Joint Special Representative of UNAMID in Darfur. He is a national of Germany and has worked for more than 35 years with the United Nations and its agencies, funds and programmes, in various leadership positions, such as UN Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Representative; Senior Development Advisor and has spearheaded complex development, peace building and reconstruction projects across the globe. The talk came at a pivotal moment, where the United Nations is discussing sweeping reforms to its peace and security institutions and processes. At the core of the reform process and the talk with Peter Schuman was the challenge of organizing peacekeeping more effectively and more sustainably. The discussions focused on the need for more cooperation between different UN agencies and the integration of development measures into peacekeeping missions. We thank Peter Schuman for revealing insights and an engaging debate.
