Erasmus in Mallorca
Starting from the winter semester 2023/24, students of the faculty of philosophy can take part in an exchange program at the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) as part of Erasmus+. The UIB is part of the top 5 of the Spanish universities regarding innovation, technological development and quality of research and in addition, it belongs to the top 10 of the worldwide universities in the field of tourism studies. The Universitat de les Illes Balears places particular value on a close contact with local residents and the direct interaction between students and lecturers. This can be achieved through small course groups, for example.
Erasmus students also have the opportunity to live in a reasonably priced room in a hall of residence on campus, and the university even helps to arrange contact with apartments outside its area of responsibility.
The UIB also offers a wide range of research groups and courses (not only) in Romance languages, from which foreign students can also benefit greatly. At the Departamento de Filología Catalana y Lingüística General, for example, various research groups have been set up, such as the Grupo de Investigación Sociolingüística de las Illes Balears (GRESIB), which deals with the description of the sociolinguistic situation on the island and the evaluation of institutional linguistic interventions, among other things.
The courses that are offered by the university also contain an interesting variety of choices, like „La Idea d’Europa a través de la Història“ or „La Filosofia en el Món Actual“, that you can attend in the study programs „Spanish Language and Literature“ or „Catalan Language and Literature“. Goals and contents of the study program of one of those languages are for example the understanding and analyzing of (socio-)linguistic, cultural and literary phenomena, the linking of those with other study subjects and the analysis of the history and current status of those languages. In addition, studying in a foreign university like the UIB promotes a linguistic and cultural exchange, to which students at the University of Potsdam can also contribute and from which they can benefit.
More information on the university, procedure and offered courses can be found in this presentation by Maria del Mar Vanrell Bosch and on the website of the Institute of Romance Studies on the subject of Erasmus+.
