Research grant for new sub-project at Collaborative Research Center
Andrea Liese has successfully acquired a research grant for a sub-project at the Collaborative Research Center "Governance in Areas of Limited Statehood", which is funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).
The Collaborative Research Center focuses on the questions: How are areas of limited statehood governed? What are the specific context conditions of governance in areas of limited statehood and which problems arise? It analyzes governance – the diverse forms and modes of ruling – in areas in which state authority is limited. How are public goods provided when states do not effectively exercise a monopoly on the use of force? How are binding rules determined and enforced when states lack basic capabilities?
From 2014 to 2014, the Collaborative Research Center brings together researchers in overall 17 sub-projects. The following research research institutions are involved in this phase of the Collaborative Research Center: Freie Universität Berlin, WZB Berlin Social Science Center, German Insitute for International and Security Affairs, German Institute for Global and Area Studies, and University of Potsdam.
The sub-project examines IOs concerned with a particular governance service as well as a fundamental human right: food security. The focus is on the following questions
- How do different IOs see their role and how do they perceive the opportunities and challenges regarding their operations in areas of limited statehood?
- How do experiences gathered “on the ground” influence how IOs act?
- What are the consequences of these experiences have and how they reflect back to the international level (e.g. in terms of changing transnational norms)?
