Practical training / internships
The practical training begins in the 1st and 2nd semesters with work shadowing and continues in the 3rd and 4th semesters in the so-called ‘internal internship’. Here you will treat a child and an adult patient in small therapy teams under the supervision of an experienced speech therapist.
In the 5th semester, you will (usually) complete an external placement in the areas of acquired speech, language and swallowing disorders as well as speech development and fluency disorders. You will find detailed information on the external internship in the internship regulations and will receive it from the internship coordinator at the end of the 2nd semester, at the beginning of the 3rd semester and at the end of the 4th semester. In the Moodle Introduction to BSc Patholinguistics you will find an overview of possible internship positions, all the necessary documents and a wealth of further information (including on therapy internships abroad). The internship can be replaced by proof of successfully completed speech therapy training or proof of equivalent practical experience.
For the external internship, you must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 from 16 March 2022. Here you can find the corresponding information sheet of the German Federal Association for Academic Speech Therapy and Speech Therapy e.V.
If you have any questions about practical training, please contact the internship officer (Judith Heide, jheideuuni-potsdampde).

Stays abroad
The University of Potsdam and the Patholinguistics degree programme expressly support stays abroad during your studies. You can study abroad or complete an internship. As sufficient basic knowledge of the subject is required, a stay abroad is possible from the 3rd semester onwards. We recommend a stay abroad in the 5th and/or 6th semester. The most important prerequisite for a successful (i.e. beneficial and enjoyable) stay abroad is careful preparation. This largely depends on your own initiative. You should allow approx. 12 months for the entire preparation (up to the start of your stay abroad).
Stays abroad are also possible with health impairments; information on this can be found here. Children can also be taken abroad; if you have any questions, please contact erasmus-outgoinguuni-potsdampde.
Where you spend your stay depends on various criteria. Primarily, you should choose a university or an institution that offers a suitable study or internship programme. Other factors include the type of funding and the language of the country. It is also helpful to consider why you want to go abroad. You can find detailed information on these basic preliminary considerations here.
Be sure to use the services of the International Office (IO) for planning and preparation. Current information and dates for information events can be found here. In the Stories of Exchange, students from Potsdam report on their experiences abroad. Please subscribe to the IO's mailing list, which will keep you informed about news on stays abroad. You can find out about preparatory language courses at ZESSKO.
Study abroad
There are three ways to study abroad:
- Stays in other European countries with ERASMUS+ funding
- Stays in other European or non-European countries as part of a university partnership of the University of Potsdam
- Individual applications worldwide
Staying abroad in Europe with ERASMUS+ funding
If you are planning a stay at another European university, it is a good idea to take advantage of ERASMUS+ funding. As an ERASMUS+ scholarship holder, your tuition fees in the host country will be waived. You will also receive a mobility grant, the amount of which is based on the cost of living in the host country, among other things. Please refer to the International Office website for information on the basic procedure and current funding rates. The Patholinguistics degree programme currently maintains partnerships with the following universities:

*Approximate information. Please research the exact lecture times for the respective semester on the homepage of the respective university.
If you would like to study in another country or at another university, this may be possible via the so-called Restplatz-Börse or with a non-subject-related application. Information on this can be found in the FAQ of the International Office. An overview of all ERASMUS+ partner universities of the University of Potsdam can be found here.
Applications for an Erasmus+ scholarship can only be made via the International Office's online application portal.
The application deadline for the coming academic year (winter and summer semester) is 31 January. Please note: There is only one application round for both semesters! This means that the application deadline for winter semester 2023/24 and summer semester 2024 is 31 January 2023.
In the online application portal of the International Office you will be asked to submit the following documents, among others:
1. curriculum vitae in tabular form
2. transcript of records (PULS extract)
3. justification of the application/ letter of motivation (approx. 1 page, in German or English)
4. proof of language proficiency in English (e.g. through the Abitur certificate) and, if applicable, in the language of the country/language of instruction
You will be informed by the end of February whether your application has been successful. If you have received positive feedback and have accepted the scholarship, you will be nominated by the International Office at the partner university and informed of your nomination. You must then apply to the partner university; you can usually find information on this on the partner university's website. The partner university will also provide you with further information on finding accommodation, any documents to be submitted, etc..
You should make your course selection in good time before your stay abroad with the study agreement (Learning Agreement BEFORE mobility). Should there be any changes to the courses specified in the Learning Agreement at a later date, please indicate these in the Learning Agreement DURING the mobility. From 2021, the University of Potsdam will use the Online Learning Agreement (OLA). You can find a guide to creating the OLA here.
You can view the Erasmus+ application schedule and all the steps to be taken here.
Study abroad in Europe or outside Europe as part of a university partnership with the University of Potsdam
At the partner universities of the University of Potsdam, a number of study places are available each year with tuition fee waivers. As several applicants are usually interested in the places, a selection committee decides on the nomination of candidates from our university. However, the host universities make the final decision on the admission of students placed by the University of Potsdam.
The programme is generally open to students from all disciplines. However, application is possible at the end of the first year of study at the earliest; proof of academic achievement for the first year of study must be available at the time of application. Good academic performance, good language skills and a clear idea of the study programme abroad will increase your chances of being nominated.
All further information, including application deadlines, can be found on the website of the International Office.
Individual applications worldwide
With an individual application, you plan and organise your entire stay abroad independently. You should plan enough time for this, preferably a whole year, so that you can organise everything in peace and quiet alongside your studies here. You are free to choose your university. You must enquire about the admission requirements at your chosen university yourself and fulfil them by submitting all the required documents by the prescribed deadlines. You can find more information here.
Internship abroad
General information on internships abroad can be found on the website of the International Office.
Therapy internships abroad are also possible: an internship abroad is recognised if the supervisor is a speech and language therapist recognised under national law. The internship documentation must comply with the internship regulations. If the internship documentation is not in German or English, a certified translation must be provided.
And after the BSc Patholinguistics?
After completing your Bachelor's degree in Patholinguistics, which qualifies you for a career, you can go straight into the speech therapy profession or continue your studies on a Master's programme.
Due to the interdisciplinary orientation of the BSc in Patholinguistics, there are a wide range of options for a Master's programme, e.g. in the fields of health management, (inclusion) education and cognitive sciences.
At the University of Potsdam, you have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge in speech therapy research and evidence-based research in speech, language and swallowing disorders in the IECL - International M.Sc./ Ph.D. Programme for Experimental and Clinical Linguistics and to enter the work of the numerous research laboratories at the Department of Linguistics. There is also the opportunity to do a doctorate on the IECL and the IDEALAB - International Doctorate for Experimental Approaches to Language and Brain doctoral programme, which also has an international focus.
