The Berlin-Brandenburg Institute of Advanced Biodiversity Research (BBIB), led by Prof. Dr. Matthias Rillig from Freie Universität Berlin and Prof. Dr. Florian Jeltsch from University of Potsdam, is a consortium of four universities and five non-university research institutions working together to decipher the still poorly understood structural and functional basis of biodiversity. The goal is to gain insights needed to address the global challenge of accelerating biodiversity loss. BBIB aims to integrate social and environmental factors to find sustainable solutions for the future. To achieve this goal, BBIB crosses traditional academic boundaries by integrating existing expertise in the ecological, evolutionary, social, and political sciences in the Berlin region. In addition to many individual collaborations, BBIB scientists successfully worked together in the federally funded project BIBS "Bridging in Biodiversity Science".
