BA English and American Studies
About the degree
At the University of Potsdam, you can study English and American Studies either as a first or second subject as part of a two-subject Bachelor.
Our BA programme offers you not only the key skills needed to pursue literary and cultural studies as well as linguistics but also provides you with the opportunity to improve your academic English and study a wide range of Anglophone literatures, Englishes and cultural theories.
Thus, the focus in your three years programme will lie on:
- Development and Variation of the English Language
- Present-Day English Language and Linguistics
- American Studies
- English Literature
- British Cultural Studies
- Postcolonial anglophone Literatures and Cultures
- Academic English.
Our cooperation with international partner universities and institutions (not only via the Erasmus programme) allows us to urgently advice Bachelor students to spend a semester or two abroad. Meeting new cultures and improving your language skills is not only valuable for your studies but also for your personal life and future career. A stay abroad can easily be integrated into your studies since credits from a foreign academic institution can be transferred to Potsdam records, and various possibilities for grants can provide financial support for such a study phase abroad.
After finishing your BA programme, you will have earned a first professional qualification but you can, of course, also go on to a Master’s programme in Potsdam or elsewhere.
