Seminar — Estimating the effective Gilbert damping

The dynamics of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation is characterized by the precession of the spin in an external bias field and by the Gilbert damping, which determines the relaxation timescale of the system. Using a formulation of the LLG equation for an open system (see Ref. [1]), I will present a simple analytical argument on how the relaxation timescales can be estimated from the properties of the system-bath coupling.
