Interested students can apply for the new master’s degree program „Chemistry of Functional Molecules and Materials“ until 15 February 2025, starting at the University of Potsdam in the next summer semester. The research-oriented master's program offers the opportunity to experience chemistry as a key science for solving global challenges. Innovative molecules and materials that are developed using sustainable processes, or that make such processes possible in the first place, play a central role here.

The English-language degree program “Chemistry of Functional Molecules and Materials” prepares students comprehensively for future-oriented research and a career in industry, particularly in areas such as biomedicine, environmental technology and the chemical industry. In the master's program, they acquire in-depth knowledge in the fields of organic, inorganic, physical and theoretical chemistry as well as biochemistry and materials science with a high proportion of elective courses. Students can specialize in the areas of “Materials and Interfaces” or “Molecular and Biomolecular Chemistry” by designing their individual course of study accordingly.

“The course is characterized by a very high proportion of research: students gain insights into current interdisciplinary research topics in the field of development and application of functional molecules and materials both in the lectures and in the laboratory,” explains Nora Kulak who is professor for inorganic chemistry and chairperson of the Institute of Chemistry at the University of Potsdam. “Important areas of application include catalysis, biomedicine, sensor technology and sustainable technologies and processes.”

In addition, interdisciplinary links to physics and biology are taught in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of chemical processes. Practice-oriented modules and close integration with current research topics through direct involvement in the chemistry working groups create the necessary skills in modelling, preparation and analytical characterization of functional chemical systems.
