The largest university in Brandenburg welcomes 5,422 new students for the 2019/20 academic year. Over 3,000 of them are studying at a university for the first time. As a result, the University of Potsdam currently has a total of 21,229 students, which is a new record. “This is proof of the first stage of expansion that was agreed on with the federal state of Brandenburg,” says President Prof. Oliver Günther. “Particularly in the field of teaching degree programs, we have achieved a significant increase, thus taking the first step to counteracting the continuing shortage of teaching staff in Brandenburg.”
While the number of new students in teaching degree programs increased by 150 to 800 in 2019, an additional 200 places are in planning for next year. The state of Brandenburg allocates up to eleven million euros a year for the expansion of teacher training. In addition to 20 new professorships, numerous staff positions are currently being advertised to ensure the quality of studies and the supervision of students.
This year again, more foreign students are coming to Potsdam. The number of courses offered in English is increasing as the university is internationalizing. This semester, the English-language master’s degree programs Ecology, Evolution and Conservation, and Mathematics will be offered again.
