Enrollment: What should be considered in case of a change of university (newcomers) to a higher semester of the Master's program?
For a change of university and study program to a higher semester, please read carefully the information pages of the UP on the topic of university change.
It is important that they do not apply online, but directly contact the Examination Board:
Step 1 Recognition of the performance and grading by the examination board in the respective semester. To do this, make an appointment with the Examining Board chairmen:
a.) Please print out the two grading and recognition forms and fill in your data as far as you can.
b.) Please add your Transcript of Records as well as
c.) a brief, informal letter to the Examining Board Chairperson requesting you to apply to the UP for the EEC Master's program after a change of university.
d.) After the appointment with the examination board, submit the documents (a-c) to the student secretariat. Recognition of study credits may also take place later after admission within 4 weeks (see step 4 below), so if you are in time pressure you can reset this form a bit.
So always take care early and please note the deadlines mentioned here for submitting your documents!
Step 2 Enrollment in the Student Secretariat:
You can only enroll in the respective semester after receiving the admission letter from the examination board. The classification itself is not a study place guarantee.
Step 3
If the admission letter and the confirmation of the acceptance of the place of study are available in the student secretariat, the bill of exchange is completed. Prerequisite for this is the receipt of the semester contribution.
Step 4
You must present the proof of achievement from your previous studies (copy) and the application for recognition of study achievements (original!) Within 4 weeks after admission to the examination office of UP.
Study: How do I complete my specialization module?
The specialization module (12 credits, corresponding to 360 hours of work including a report) serves to prepare the Master's thesis, but is not part of it. Usually it should be attended in the working group in which the master's thesis is prepared. However, it may also have a different orientation than the Master's thesis, so that students can acquire additional competences. In principle, it is possible to complete the specialization module in a non-university institution, but this must be agreed in advance with a person in charge of a specialization module in the degree program EEC, who will later register in PULS. This persons takes over the formal responsibility for the specialization module and can therefore make fulfilling requirements! The successful implementation must be confirmed by the external organization according to the specifications of the person responsible for the module. This certificate and, if applicable, the report must then be submitted to the person responsible for the module.
The specialization module can be graded as well as not graded.
Study: Can I distribute my participation in the general seminar for several semesters?
Yes, that may be useful for individual scheduling. You have to attend the general seminar 15 times to get 1 LP.
You can compile different topics over several semesters.
Study: Is a certificate sufficient for examination inability?
In addition to the certificate you must submit a form that you can find here.
Study: Course attendance - assignment to pulse module
If you register on PULS for a course, you have to decide which official module this course is assigned to when you enter the TAN. The choice of the module when registering via PULS is binding. The choice can only be changed during the period of occupancy. Not later.
Your final record does not list the name of the single courses or course packets, only the name of the PULS module are listed in your master degree record.
Study: How do I apply for compensation in case of disadvantages?
Please note §15 of the general study and examination regulations and the general information of the University of Potsdam. The latter pages also describe the procedure and provide an application form.
Study: How / when can I take a free trial without grading?
As part of the standard period of study of the Master's program, up to 2 free trials without grading are possible (see study regulations). This can be applied for directly online via PULS.
Study: What do I do if my module is booked incorrectly in PULS?
If a module in PULS has been booked incorrectly (for example, in elective area A instead of B), this can only be changed by the examination office.
To do this, you submit an informal (signed) application to the Examining Board Chairman EEC via the secretariat. After approval (return via secretariat), you can submit the amendment to the Examination Office.
Please note that the Examination Office does not automatically approve any amendment. In order to avoid later problems, the actual registration for module examinations must be done with great care!
Study: How does the recognition of study achievements work?
The application for recognition of academic achievements can be carried out directly online via PULS. The application for recognition of academic achievements can be carried out directly online via PULS. After the application has been completed, it must be checked and confirmed (signed) by the chairperson of the examination board. Once this has been done, the application must be scanned in by the student, uploaded to PULS and forwarded to the examination office.
Study: Where can I find information about studying abroad (including ERASMUS)?
General information about studying abroad can be found here.
In any case, it is recommended to obtain information about the recognition of academic achievements (see below) before studying abroad (eg Studienberatung PD, Dr. Thilo Heinken) and to conclude a Learning Agreement.
The submission of the documents takes place analogously to the recognition of study and examination achievements through the GSL!
Study: What happens if I take more courses than necessary?
1. Formation of the final grade
If students have taken more elective courses, they have time to decide which completed modules are to be included in the final grade by means of a so-called grade picking process before submitting their final thesis.
If the student has not been nominated when submitting the final paper, the compulsory elective modules count in the order of their completion (priority principle) until the required number of compulsory elective credit points has been achieved. For more information, see page 37 https://www.uni-potsdam.de/fileadmin01/projects/studium/docs/03_studium_konkret/07_rechtsgrundlagen/kommentierung_bama-o_studierende_2013.pdf
2. Presentation of additional benefits on certificate
The additional benefits are not displayed on the certificate, but only on the transcript of records, which is also part of the final documents.
Study: How do I register for the beginning of the semester?
Information on the feedback (bank details, intended purpose, etc.) can be found under: Re-registration.
Study: Can I get credit for modules that are not part of the module manual?
Modules which are not listed in the module manual can not be credited. You are welcome to take part in these modules but you can not credit them in PULS.
Study:When should I take my exams?
We strongly advise you to not delay the taking of exams. Try to take the exams as close to the respective course as possible, some lectureres are only at the university for a restricted period of time and are no longer available and nor obligated to offer the exam once they have left the university!
Study: Acceptance of external courses/courses from other universities
For modules that fit to the MEEC spectrum but are not offered by UP an exeption can be made to take such a course at the FU or HU, and later accept the course as one of our PULS Modules. For the acceptance of a full module or courses they have to be graded and you need to provide a guest auditor's license (Gasthörerschein) from the external university, the course certificate, and fill out the form "Recognition of academic achievements" (Anerkennung von Studienleistungen). Contact the Programme Coordinator Dr. Heinken before taking the course to prevent unpleasent surprises. For acceptance of a lecture/seminar as part of a course packet you need to agree with the respective course packet organiser in advance. Please consider also taking extra courses just out of interest (even if no acceptance can be granted), you can always add the course certificate directly to applications or whereever you need it.
Please note that the FU allows external students to only take one module per semester.
Study: How can I register for exams?
You can register for a module exam once the respondible lectuter has opened the exam for registration. If you decide to withdraw from the exam you can do that up to eight days before the exam date, for written and oral exams, or until the end of the registeration period for home work exams.
It is best to register for a module exam once you have completed all courses necessary to complete the module or the course packet that will be accounted as a module respectively.
Exams for specific courses that are part of a module can be, but not have to be, equivalent to the module exam. The responsible lecturer can give you information on this and will tell you if you have to register in PULS for the respective course exam or if you have to register in another way (i.e. directly with the lecturer in a paper list).
Master Thesis: How do I register for the Master Thesis?
In your PULS you find a form for the registration of your master thesis topic. Please fill out this form, sign it and have it signed by your thesis examiners. You have to register the official titel of your master thesis as a topic, not just a general topic. Once your signature and those of your supervisors are on the form the chair of the examination board has to approve your examiners and topic, so please hand in your form at the office of the chair of the examination board. Once the chairperson has signed the form, and thereby officially assigned your master thesis topic, you have seven days to upload a scan of the form in PULS and forward it to the examination office of the university.
You can upload the scan of the form in PULS via the "Document upload" section. The document scan can have one of theses formats: PDF, PNG, JPG, JEPG. Once uploaded the document is automatically transfered to the universities examination office.
You can register the topic of your master thesis at any point in time, it is independet from the registration, enrollment and withdrawal period for courses.
Master Thesis: What do I need to know about the supervisor choice?
The work may take place in departments of a university lecturer involved in the teaching of the EEC course or, after obtaining the approval of the examination board, in a university or non-university research institute operating in a field relevant to the master program. Supervisors and second reviewers are two independent PhD scholars. At least one of them must be a university teacher (PD or Prof.). Please coordinate in advance with a supervisor / examiner in the course of study EEC for planned external master theses!
Master thesis: Is there a guideline for the preparation of the Master thesis?
Yes, there is an orientation guide for the preparation of the Master's thesis.
Master Thesis: How can I apply for an extension of the Master Thesis?
According to the general study and examination regulations, an extension of up to one month is possible for important reasons and with the consent of the supervisor. For this purpose, an informal application (signed by the candidate and the supervisor) to the Examining Board Chair EEC must be submitted via the secretariat.
After approval, the application for renewal is submitted by the candidate to the examination office. Please note: the possibility of a prolongation of up to 3 months provided for in the subject-specific regulations will be overruled by the general regulations from their validity.
Master Thesis: Can I write my master thesis at an external institution or outside of academia?
Yes, you can. Master theses need one supervisor and one additional reviewer, one of them has to be habilitated (the other as least a master degree), and one has to be a lecturer in the EEC programme. In most cases the supervisor fulfils both requirements, i.e. is a habilitated lecturer in our Programme. If you want to conduct your master thesis outside Academia, you should make sure that you find a habilitated reviewer from EEC, and get adequate supervision by your external supervisor (it is neither efficient nor fair in comparison to other students to expect intense supervision from both). The arrangement requires that the involved EEC lecturers knows and trusts the external supervisor to supervise according to our standards, otherwise he or she will not take on the assignment.
Master Thesis Defence: How do I organize the defense of the Master Thesis?
The commission of the master thesis defence consists of the first and second supervisor of the thesis and a third assessor. First and second supervisors are already appointed when the master thesis topic is registered with the examination board, the third person in the commission is appointed once a defence date is requested. Students have the right to suggest the third member of the commission. Since there is always confusion here: please read attentively the general study and examination regulations of the university!
The first supervisor must fulfil the requirements for a professor. The second supervisor and the assessor must meet the general requirements for examiners at the university, i.e. for Master's examinations at least a Master's degree and an employment contract at the university. All three members of the examination commission have to be present at the defence.
When choosing your commission, please also note that they belong to different working groups. A selection of three reviewers from the same working group (e.g. 3 reviewers from the working group Biodiversity Research) are not allowed!
When you have found a date, ask the secretary of the first primary reviewer to find a room for the defence. Defence must be carried out in presence and can only happen in rooms belonging to the University of Potsdam. Only in exceptional cases can the defence take place online via Zoom. If the defence has to take place online, all reviewers and the chairperson of the examination board must agree to this and the Zoom link and password have to be given on the form at the respective section.
Once date and place for the defence are planned, report the title, commission members, date and location of the defence to the chairperson of the examination board via handing in this form at Ms. Kaminskis office. Please fill in the form online/digitally! The supervisor signatures can be put on digitally and the form can be handed in as a scan via email to master-eecuuni-potsdampde. The form will stay with the chairperson of the examination board and does not have to be passed on to the examination office.
Master defences are public events, therefore the time and date of the defence will be publicly announced by Ms. Kaminski. Please hand in the filled out and signed form registering the defence in a timely matter to allow sufficient time for the preparation of the announcement!
Please note the following:
- Composition of the commission (see criteria above)
- Appointments: Do not plan the defense before the thesis is marked as passed and the reviews are in
- Please hand in the form registering the defense in due time
Master Thesis Defence: Where can I find a protocol template for the defence of a master thesis and the notification of grading in defense of a master thesis?
Please use the following forms:
Please note: Both documents must be forwarded by the supervisor to the Examinations Office.
Master Thesis Defence: Do I defend in German or English?
The defense is in English for all students starting from WiSe 2019/20 onwards. As part of the internationalization of the study program from WiSe 2019/20 onwards, all exams, as well as the Master's defense, in the Master's program Ecology, Evolution and Conservation will then be held in English.
For students before winter semester 2019/20: the defense takes place in German. Until the winter semester 2019/2020, MOEN is a German-language study program.
Master Thesis Defence: What is the procedure for defending the master's thesis?
The defense consists of about a 20 minutes talk as well as a 30-minute discussion / questioning by the examining board. The survey is logged. The examination committee awards a joint grade.
Master Thesis Defence: Can I defend online?
The master thesis defence has to be held in presence in a room of the University of Potsdam. Only in exceptional cases can the defence be held online via Zoom. If the defence has to take place online, all reviewers and the chairperson of the examination board must agree to this and the Zoom link and password have to be given on the form at the respective section.
