This year’s Summer School for Modern Hebrew will offer intensive language courses on four different levels. The course languages will be English (for instructions) and Hebrew (for conversation and exercises).

  • Course 1 (beginners):
Introduction to Modern Hebrew for students without prior skills in Hebrew, starting with the Hebrew Alphabet. Participants will acquire knowledge of the fundamental structures of the Hebrew grammar (verb morphology and syntax) and a basic vocabulary.
  • Course 2 (high novice):
Students should have some basic knowledge of the Hebrew verbal system (present tense and infinitive) as well as some basic vocabulary. This course will focus on the past tense and give an introduction to the future pattern of the verb. Participants will also improve their vocabulary skills as well as their oral Expression.
  • Course 3 (lower intermediate)
The aim of this course is to consolidate and broaden the understanding of the grammatical structures and vocabulary. The course will focus on the inflection of the strong verbs in the future tense, and frequent weak verbs. Participants will be able to read and write short passages and have discussions on the topics studied.
  • Course 4 (intermediate):
This course is directed at students who are familiar with the active binyanim in Modern Hebrew. Verb morphology will focus on weak verbs and on passive patterns. Participants will read and discuss texts in various fields and will improve their written expression. Syntax exercises will include compound sentences and prepositions words.

Each course will offer many exercises in reading, listening comprehension, and conversation. Students will be given short quizzes every week and will take a final exam on the last day. Material and concept of the courses will be organized similar to an academic Ulpan (intensive Hebrew course in Israel).
