TaCoS and StuTS 2024

We would like to draw your attention to two linguistics conferences that will be organized by students for students.

1.) StuTS (Studentische Tagung Sprachwissenschaft) No. 75.: This is a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow linguistics students. You can listen to other students' talks and also share your thoughts with them. The conference is scheduled for May 9-12, 2024. For further details, please check out this website: stuts.de

2.) TaCoS (Tagung der Computerlinguistik-Studierenden) No. 33: This student conference would be an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in computational linguistics to discuss and exchange his or her ideas with other interested students. The conference is scheduled for May 16-18, 2024. For further details, please have a look at this: tacosconference.github.io

Both conferences are held in German and English.

Suggestions for Improving the Quality of Studies

During our last meeting on 30 January 2024, we developed a few suggestions for improving the quality of studies at the Department of Linguistics. For example, we would like the department to communicate regularly with all linguistics students in the form of a newsletter to draw attention to jobs or events. We also criticise the fact that the department's website has been neglected in recent times. We intend to submit our suggestions to the department in the coming months. If you have any further suggestions, please contact us.

Frechmen Meeting 27.10.23

On 27.10.2023 we met in Golm and presented our work, our office, house 14 and the reading café. Afterwards, there was a speed dating get-to-know-you session and two puzzle games. The puzzles were solved by the groups! Bravo! Later, we went to Bar Gelb together and had a nice chat over drinks. For all those who could not come: You are also welcome to drop by an FSR meeting (meetings are announced via the website and usually take place in our office in house 14).

Accreditation Process for Computational Linguistics

Every 7-8 years, a course such as Linguistics at the University of Potsdam goes through an internal evaluation process. If this is successfully completed, the course will be accredited for the next period and can be studied and taught regularly. This process is currently taking place for the B.Sc. Computational Linguistics. Accordingly, we have been in contact with the university evaluation team since spring. On June 28th, 2023, we, the FSR, had a personal conversation in Golm, where we tried to bring our positive and negative feedback into the process.

If Computational Linguistics students would like to make suggestions for the future design of the course, we are happy to pass them on.

Some topics where we see room for improvement:

- Agreement of internship and course of study

- Internationalization of the course through better embedding of Erasmus exchange programs and Erasmus Plus internships

- greater share of machine learning
