There are events like the Potsdamer Tag der Wissenschaft 2022 where selected aspects of the project are presented to the interested public.
Furthermore, there is information in easy language for everyone to understand on floodplains and their role and on the hands-on floodplain model built for this project, which nicely explains how floodplains work in case of a flood.
Potsdam Day of Science:
On Saturday, May 7th, 2022, the Potsdam Day of Science was held on the grounds of the ATB and FloDEMec introduced itself with the floodplain model, a floodplain quiz, a floodplain photo exhibition and an information poster. Various age groups visited the tent, kindergarten children, school children, students, parents and seniors. The floodplain model was flooded five times- and also drained, which was acknowledged with the same astonishment of the spectators as the flooding.
Children's University:
The Potsdam Children's University took place on September 23, 2022. FloDEMec and the value of the river meadows and what river meadows actually are were introduced to about 400 inquisitive children and their accopaniment. In addition to a lecture in which the condition of the rivers and floodplains as a migration corridor was discussed, the floodplain model was also flooded and an experiment was carried out on the cleaning function of the floodplains. The group discussions on the model at the end of both lectures allowed an intensive exchange with many good questions and showed the children's interest in nature.
