Dolomites Fieldcourse
Maria Mutti, Sara Tomás
Students will acquire in-depth knowledge of the methods used to study sedimentary successions and the role of subsidence, sea level, sediment production, and climate in the formation of basin-fill stratigraphy. Through the analysis of selected intervals in Earth history, this course examines the feedbacks among various components in the Earth system, emphasizing in particular the interactions among the biosphere, the lithosphere, and the climate system.
This practical excursion to the Dolomites will help to gain practical skills in applying the principles of basin analysis and the processes that control sedimentary history, investigating strata deposited across the Permo-Triassic mass extinction and recording the aftermath of this catastrophic event and the resulting feedbacks in the Earth system.
