Physicians and Hospitals
Going to a Physician
Your first step as a patient is to see your general practitioner. If you have urgent problems, you can go, without an appointment, to the office hours of your physician of choice. If your problems occur outside of the doctor's office hours, please contact the doctors on-duty.
If you have specific problems that a general practitioner cannot solve, then he will provide you with a referral to a specialist. Then you will have to make an appointment in advance with a specialist.
Hospital emergency rooms are for emergencies only.
Specialists in Potsdam rarely have short-term appointments available. You can often get an earlier appointment with a specialist in Berlin.
Costs
If you are insured by a statutory health insurance company, a visit to a physician will not cost you anything. Physicians send their invoices directly to your health insurance company.
If you are privately insured, your physician will issue the invoice to you. You will then pay the invoice directly. You can send the invoice to your private health insurance company and have the amount reimbursed, up to the contractually stipulated amount.
Physicians will sometimes offer you "IGEL" (individual health services) benefits. If you would like to take advantage of these special services, you will have to bear the costs yourself. Statutory health insurance companies will not pay for these services.
Always bring your health insurance card when you visit a physician!
