Dalitisms
Employing the toolkits of different disciplines such as cultural, literary and film studies, this project analyzes different articulations of the Dalit anti-caste movement – which I conceive of as Dalitisms in the plural – with particular emphasis on the ways in which they perform modernity. These instances will serve as reference points for contrapuntal readings that problematize Brahminical, Hindu-nationalist claims to universality. The goal is to elicit alternative, non-hegemonic or ‘minor’ conceptions and practices that allow for more equitable and ultimately more democratic participation in the Indian Republic. My methodological approach is to conduct readings focusing on instances of intertextuality in Rajesh Rajamani’s 2020 caste-critical short film The Discreet Charm of the Savarnas. Each chapter of the dissertation discusses what I construe as an intertext invoked by Rajamani to assemble a more complete picture of how the contemporary culturalized practice of and resistance to caste are configured.
Biography
Florian is an associate with the DFG-funded Research Training Group Minor Cosmopolitanisms at the University of Potsdam, where he also holds a position as lecturer at the Department of English and American Studies. His PhD thesis titled “Dalitisms” attempts to locate different Dalit modernities in an investigation into the relationship between Hindu-nationalism and the Dalit anti-caste movement. Splitting more than a year between the University of Delhi and EFL University Hyderabad, Florian has researched possibilities for and realities of cosmopolitan alliances in Dalit writing and activism before joining the University of Potsdam.
