The interplay of natural hazards and seismicity as the trigger: paleoseismology and tectonic geomorphology
PhD-Thesis: Extreme events against the background of seismic trigger mechanisms: Paleoseismic and tectonic geomorphology in the northern Pamir
My PhD-Project (January 2018 - December 2020) is part of the CaTeNA-project within the CLIENT II program of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
The main goal of this project is the assessment of natural hazards and geo-risks through better understanding of interdisciplinary processes and coverage of these processes on different time scales.
Related goals are:
- Identification of active faults and estimation of their deformation rates along the central Asian deformation belts through geodesy, (paleo)-seismology, structural geology, cosmogenic nuclide dating and thermochronology.
- Identification of seismically and climatically triggered extreme events in geological archives
- Better understanding of coupled natural hazards and cascading effects, such as e.g. earthquakes, extreme meteorological events and mass movements
- A variable landslide-susceptibility model involving dynamic atmospheric and ground motion data, as well as an improved estimation of the resulting impact on inhabited areas and transport infrastructure
- Direct and efficient communication of the time-varying landslide susceptibility and the associated risk, based on interactive visualization based on dynamic multilingual web GIS platform
CaTeNA - Working Package 3
Focus on most active fault system: Pamir Thrust System (PTS)
- Fault geometry and behaviour
- Earthquake and mass movement history
- Combination of seismic and climatic data for trigger question
