4.40 p.m. Presentation of the cenotaph of Michel de Montaigne

The famous cenotaph of Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (1533-1592) is one of the most emblematic works in the collections of the Musée d'Aquitaine. Sculpted at the end of the 16th century, it occupied the site of the Feuillants convent, where the illustrious thinker was buried. Classified as a historical monument, it has since undergone several moves, a fire and haphazard repairs. Its restoration in 2017 has allowed to give it back all its coherence, and to initiate a research program around its presumed tomb.

Presentation by Christian Block and Laurent Védrine, director of the Musée d'Aquitaine (French/English)

5pm Screening: Montaigne et le tombeau mystérieux

Documentary film by Pauline Coste. 2021, 52 min. (English subtitles).

Has the tomb of the famous philosopher been found in the reserves of the Musée d'Aquitaine, in the heart of the city of Bordeaux? The film shows an extraordinary archaeological investigation, where archaeologists and historians will work hand in hand to unravel the mystery of a 500 year old tomb...

The screening will be followed by a discussion with Christian Block and Laurent Védrine
