This is a very vague step, but it varies from person to person. Some general considerations to have in mind when preparing your time abroad:
1. Are you going within or outside of the EU? This can affect things including:
- If you're able to use your current insurance
- Phone plans
- Requirement of a visa
2. How long are you going to stay? Typically, going abroad is one semester in duration, but this can also vary case by case. Some things to consider when choosing to stay longer or not:
- For international students: If you stay outside of Germany for more than 6 months straight, your visa becomes void. Therefore, if you want to complete an study abroad for more than 6 months, make sure you consult the International Office to follow the correct steps in ensuring your do not lose your visa status.
- For those with scholarships / financial support: If you choose to stay for more than semester, this could potentially affect your duration of studies. Make sure you know the guidelines of your financial aid before making decisions on the length of your stay.
- Beurlaubung - if you take a semester off or not (see the next step for more details).
3. Beurlaubung - Do I need to take a semester off?
This is an important consideration you need to make when going abroad. If you stay enrolled at Uni Potsdam, you have to pay the normal fees for the semester even if you are not attending at all. However, if you do not want to do this, then you can consult with the International Office about Beurlabung / taking a semester off, meaning you will take a leave of absence. This however will not affect your student status - you will continue to be immatriculated - but this semester will not count towards the duration of your studies. This can be helpful in some cases for instance if you are staying more than a semester.
4. Preparing for leaving Germany and arriving in your desired country
This is yet again vague because it is very specific to each person. We recommend that you utilize resources provided by the International Office or Internships Abroad along with conducting your own research about what you need for your trip. It's important to have a list of everything you need to do (for both leaving and arriving) in order to ensure you do not miss any steps.
