Evolutionary Psychology and Psychiatry
Evolutionary psychiatry, also known as Darwinian psychiatry, is a theoretical approach to psychiatry that aims to explain psychiatric disorders in evolutionary terms. It emphasizes providing scientific explanations rather than treating mental disorders. It asks questions of ultimate causation. For example, psychiatric genetics may discover genes associated with mental disorders, but evolutionary psychiatry asks why these genes persist in the population. Other fundamental questions in evolutionary psychiatry include why heritable mental disorders are so common, how to distinguish between mental function and dysfunction, and whether certain forms of suffering have provided an adaptive advantage. Evolutionary psychiatry seeks to integrate insights from traditional schools of psychology and psychiatry, such as social psychology, behaviorism, biological psychiatry, and psychoanalysis, into a holistic account related to evolutionary biology.

How should we regulate?
How regulation could fail?
How to design an institutional system which is capable of delivering good regulations?
How to assess regulatory quality?

Introduction to Law and Economics
The purpose of this class is to introduce students to the discipline of “law and economics”. Law and economics comprises two related enterprises. The first enterprise is positive. It uses economic ideas to understand the behavioral consequences of changes in legal rules, an exercise in applying price theory. The second enterprise is normative, and thus more controversial. It appraises legal rules to determine the extent to which they meet the social goal of efficiency, an application of welfare economics.

Introduction to the Laws of War
This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the international legal framework governing the use of force and the conduct of hostilities between states. It begins by examining war as a concept in international relations and explores the fundamental principles underlying the prohibition on the inter-state use of force. Students will study the key exceptions to this prohibition, including self-defense and other legally recognized justifications. The course then delves into the law of armed conflict - its history, sources, and the classification of conflicts - alongside the rules governing targeting and conduct during warfare. It further introduces the basics of international criminal law, the protection of human rights in armed conflict, and contemporary challenges such as targeted killings, the use of AI and cyber operations under international law. Drawing on Craig Martin’s notion of the “Laws of War,” the course aims to equip students with an understanding of how international law seeks to balance state sovereignty, security, and humanitarian concerns in times of conflict.

Current Issues of International Environmental Law
Delivered asynchronously, the course opens with a brief “zeroing” lecture that refreshes the essentials of public international law - actors, sources and dispute settlement - so that students from different backgrounds can start on common ground. It then unfolds in two parts. The first develops a solid foundation in international environmental law through a set of lectures that trace its historical evolution, unpack core principles, map global environmental governance and law-making processes, and examine judicial and compliance mechanisms. Building on that basis, the second part turns to selected contemporary issues. Students will explore environmental sovereignty in an interdependent world; the emerging right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment; sustainable development and the SDGs; the protection of future generations; the interaction between trade and the environment through sustainable development chapters in EU free trade agreements; and the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. Assessment is by a short multiple-choice quiz (10 questions). The course is passed with at least 6 correct answers. The Course Learning Outcomes are as follows:
- Acquire knowledge about the historical evolution and foundational principles of International Environmental Law, including the development of global environmental governance structures and lawmaking processes.
- Demonstrate understanding of the key mechanisms for judicial review, compliance, and enforcement in the context of international environmental obligations.
- Develop the ability to analyze complex legal and institutional frameworks related to environmental sovereignty, the right to a healthy environment, and sustainable development.
- Evaluate the relevance and application of international legal instruments and mechanisms in protecting the rights of future generations and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Interpret and assess the environmental dimensions of trade agreements, particularly the Sustainable Development Chapters of EU Free Trade Agreements, and the implications of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.
- Apply critical thinking skills to current debates and challenges in International Environmental Law, identifying both legal and policy responses to emerging global environmental issues

Linguistic Landscapes: Languages in the Public Space (web-based training)
The public space of metropolises as well as medium and small-sized towns is profoundly marked by the historic and contemporary traces of linguistic practices, such as graffiti, informal messages, public and commercial signs. These signs are produced by different actors and also carry out different functions. Linguistic Landscape (LL) research investigates the distribution of monolingual and multilingual signs in the public sphere, their linguistic and semiotic features, as well as their functions and evolution over time. In doing so, it aims to provide insights into the status of historic and migration-related minority languages in a specific territory.

FAQ
