Since 1999Detlef Jahnholds the Chair of Comparative Politics at the University of Greifswald. Before becoming a professor at the Institute for Political Science in Greifswald, he was a research professor at Nottingham Trent University (1996-1999). He spent most of his postdoctoral period at the Institute of Political Science at the University of Gothenburg (1993-1996), funded by a postdoctoral scholarship from the German Research Foundation (DFG). He received his Ph.D. from the European Higher Education Institute in Florence in 1991. The doctoral thesis examined the influence of the growing importance of environmental problems on trade unions and was published under the title "New Politics in Trade Unions". The habilitation was supervised by Klaus Eder and the venia legendi in Political Sociology was given in autumn 1998. This work has been published under the title "Learning Ability of Political Systems".
His main research focus is on methodological aspects of comparison as a method. He also conducts DFG research projects on environmental policy in OECD countries and on political performance in Central Eastern Europe. Since 2012 Detlef Jahn is a permanent fellow at the Research College “The Transformative Power of Europe” at the FU Berlin.
