Lexical-semantic knowledge

The projects focussing on lexical and semantic processing are concerned with the structure of the mental lexicon, i.e. our long-term knowledge of word forms and the representation of word meanings. We investigate lexical-semantic processing in individuals with aphasia and dementia as well as in healthy adults.

Lexical-semantic knowledge in healthy adults is particularly interesting for us, since we use, for example, meaning associations of language-unimpaired adults to classify and interpret aphasic performance profiles.

One of our aims in this project is to bring forward assessment procedures that take into account findings on semantic processing in psycholinguistics and cognitive science. For example, one of our projects focuses on the ability of semantic differentiation, i.e. of distinguishing different semantic categories.

We are also interested in learning more about the efficacy of intervention methods for lexical-semantic deficits in spoken word production. Towards this end, we primarily focus on identifying the factors that influence the outcome of interventions in individual persons with aphasia.

An essential aspect of this research domain is the transfer of research-based procedures into the day-to-day practice of Speech-and-Language-Therapists.
