Research interests
Most of my research is in the cognitive science of reasoning and decision making, especially in situations in which the information available to make inferences is uncertain and changeable. I am also interested in how people represent and learn concepts, for instance the concept of "if-then" in "If it rained then they took the coat with them"; and in establishing links between these areas of research. This work draws on methodological tools from experimental psychology, formal logic (especially probabilistic logics) and computational modelling (especially Bayesian approaches).
I am further interested in theory of science and in what criteria we might draw on to assess and promote research quality. I am supportive of initiatives to promote open, transparent and equitable science, as well as to strengthen the links between theories and the empirical phenomena they seek to explain.
