Successful Cities
In the face of de-industrialisation, migration and urbanisation cities can be perceived as the critical focal points of processes of integration in modern societies. Rather than looking at how ‘societies’ are coming to terms with both pluralisation and growing heterogeneity, a comparative perspective on cities and the different ways they handle social, political and cultural conflicts in the context of migration seems to be promising. How and why do cities develop more or less successful strategies in creating paths to inclusion for minorities? How do they cope with both populist and right-wing xenophobic reactions towards the creation of pathways for minorities to be included into citizenship rights? In cooperation with other research institutions, the centre develops cooperative studies about the strategies that cities develop to cope with the increasing difficulty in the implementation of integration policies.
