Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education Teaching and Learning- Disruptor of Common (Mis-) Practices?
With the advent of ChatGPT and its easy accessibility, artificial intelligence (AI), and especially generative large language (LLM) models, have rapidly become a much-discussed tool in teaching & learning, raising many questions and opening new possibilities for higher education and the community. As an easily accessible tool, students as well as researchers are using the LLMs for a multitude of tasks in their work and learning. Still the discussions vary between the poles such as how to ban or detect AI for student assessment to how to change assessment practice, between AI as a useful tool in teaching, learning and research and its unreliability of outputs. The event wants to introduce the possibilities, limitations, and challenges of AI in teaching and learning and together with stakeholders discuss questions such as:
- How is AI currently used in teaching and learning by students and teachers?
- Is there a need for change of practices in teaching and learning?
- Where is AI heading, what will universities have to deal with in the future?
The Keynote “Artificial Intelligence in Education – Promises and Risks” by Prof. Dr. Katharina Scheiter, Chair of Digital Education, University of Potsdam, will introduce the current state, issues, and challenges as well as the foreseeable future of AI in higher education. A panel consisting of leadership, faculty, teaching, and student representatives will then discuss the current practice of AI in teaching and learning as well as what needs to be addressed.
The panel consists of:
Dr. Scott Gibson (Vice-Dean, Universidad San Francisco de Quito, Ecuador)
Miné de Klerk (Project Manager for Hybrid Learning, Stellenbosch University, South Africa)
Prof. Dr. Ulrich Kortenkamp (Dean of Studies, Faculty of Science)
Dr. Jochen Laubrock (Research Associate, Cognitive Sciences / Psychology, Faculty of Human Sciences)
Johannes Wilk (Master Student, “Climate, Earth, Water & Sustainability”)
Moderation:
Dr. Britta van Kempen (Vice-President for Teaching and Studies)
