In her dissertation Jennifer works with large datasets and has increasingly been making use of visualization techniques to explore relational and temporal patterns in her subject matter, coastal carbon governance. It therefore was with great interest that she participated in the workshop on visualization for the Humanities organized by the Potsdam Graduate School (PoGS) and the Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschung (ZZF) on November 17th.
The workshop was instructed by Prof. Dr. Marian Dörk, research professor for information visualization at the Urban Futures Institute at Potsdam’s University of Applied Science. The participants with backgrounds in political sciences, history and linguistics got to deepen their understanding of the possibilities offered by visualization methods and applied their newly gained insights in practical exercises.
Prof. Dörk facilitated a very productive workshop atmosphere and Jennifer left with fresh inspiration on how to approach her own research. Overall, the workshop highlighted how fruitful discussions across academic disciplines can be and its success will hopefully motivate other such initiatives.
