Position CRC1644/A102 - PhD Student Sampathkumar group

The successful candidate will work 39 hours per week, employed at the MPI-MP. The remuneration corresponds to 65% of pay group 13 level 1 of the TVöD Bund. Provided that the contractual activity is carried out without interruption, the remuneration increases after one year to 65% of pay group 13 level 2 TVöD Bund. The earliest possible starting date is 1 April 2024. Employment will be initially for 36 months, with a possibility of extension until at most 31 December 2027. The fixed term of employment is in accordance with Section 2 subsection 1 of the German Act on Limited Scientific Contracts (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz or WissZeitVG).

Your field of work:

We are looking for PhD students with the ability to work independently, having great enthusiasm and the willingness to collaborate with other team members. We offer the opportunity to work and gain a basic understanding and exposure to state-of-the-art imaging, create transcriptomic data, generate, and characterize mutant lines. The student is expected to work in close collaboration with the PhD student from the Nowak group to implement and assist in improving the development of computational image analysis tools. Your responsibilities:

  • Develop a phenotyping platform to monitor cell shape changes in response in plants exposed to different temperatures.
  • Quantitative evaluate cell shape traits.
  • Employ the resulting data for genome-wide association mapping of plasticity genes.
  • Characterize the identified genes and their mode of action molecularly.
  • Integrate data with results about plasticity to temperature from other projects.
  • Results from your work on this project should form the basis for your doctorate/PhD.

Prior specialization in plant sciences is helpful, but not required. Practical knowledge in any of the following areas is desirable:

  • Quantitative genetics (GWAS, QTL mapping)
  • Cloning techniques including CRISPR/Cas9
